Over the course of a fortnight, The Caravan Gallery transformed an empty unit (a Momentary Art Project space) in New Brighton’s Marine Point, into a temporary exhibition hub-cum-alternative visitor information centre. With the help of local residents and visitors we created a warts and all celebration of the Wirral in pictures, objects, words and performance.
The project began with a selection of our own images of the peninsular to encourage people to get talking, looking and thinking. The exhibition grew daily as visitors added their observations and contributions to The People’s Map and The People’s Wall. Exhibition highlights included a display of artists’ books created by students at Wirral Met College and their counterparts in Utah. We also managed to persuade photographers Martin Parr, Tom Wood and Ken Grant – all of whom created images in New Brighton – to contribute pieces to the exhibition.
The Wirral Pride of Place Project gave local people of all ages a great opportunity to get creative and showcase their talents – photos, videos, drawings, paintings, sculptures, home-made souvenirs, postcards. All contributions were welcome as long as they had a Wirral theme.
